- Club Member Dennis Jewsbury’s Profile – Studebaker Hawk

My Studebaker Hawk was first purchased 1960-61 from Mac Chapman in Melbourne by Jean Henderson, her daughter Jayne Green has written a short history of the car, as below.

Jean traded her 1948 Jaguar ss3.5 litre on the Studebaker Hawk, the car was used for shopping, picking up children and occasionally on driving holidays to Queensland. She stopped driving the car in the mid Seventies due to ill health and the car was not driven for 5 years or so.

Some work was done on the car in the Eighties by Studebaker Club member Mr Alan Hyde to make it driveable, tyres, brakes etc and I used the car to take Jean out from the Nursing home. She remembered the car with affection. After Jean’s death the car was passed onto Dad, Chas Henderson. It had no Roadworthy at this stage and he rarely drove it as there was no power steering. It did however remain fully registered all the time and was garaged at Mt Eliza under cover. After his death the car became mine and I drove it home to Wandong. A road worthy was obtained in 1998- 99 and I have driven it around the district mainly to Kilmore to keep it in working order. It has travelled around 3,000 miles in 15 years and always started first time even when it had been sitting for months. It has been garaged under cover during this period.

“A great car, much loved and my Mother would be pleased to know that the car will continue to give pleasure as it did for her.”

After seeing some great Studebakers, in my teens in Henderson Street, Bulimba I have always wanted to own one, so after many years I finally found the one advertised in Wandong, Victoria, which had been in the same family since new. After agreeing to sell me the Studebaker, I flew down to Melbourne to inspect the car and arrange for transport to Queensland. I have rust proofed and redone some upholstery and with the help of Club Members have been maintaining the car. I have done 1,0000 klms since registering the car in 6th month 2013 and just keeps getting better and giving much pleasure.

An article has been written by Ron Engle from Minnetrista, who with his wife Barbara had a trip to New Zealand last March, 2014. While they were touring they visited a small town called St. Andrews, south of Christchurch. There they found a garage with Studebakers. Ron has two Studebakers in the U.S.A. as shown.  1956 President and 1957 Silver Hawk.

- Studebaker Drivers Club National Meet – Taranaki 2014

Studebaker Drivers Club National Meet was held at Easter 17th – 20th April, 2014.

The 23rd Studebaker National Meet was at New Plymouth in the heart of Taranaki.

Taranaki is a wonderful province with its Maori and Colonial history and is a great place to live and play.  The city of New Plymouth is blessed with huge gardens, golf courses, art and craft facilities, walkways and sites of historical importance. The province of Taranaki was one of the first areas to be colonised owing to its extremely fertile soil. The British started surveying the area around the late 1930’s with what is now the city of New Plymouth being mapped out in 1841.

The centrepiece to Taranaki is the mountain of the same name, although until recent years the mountain had the name of Mount Egmont, which is still acceptable and used extensively. It stands 2518 metres above sea level and is a near perfect cone. While is looks a serene and calm piece of nature, it is a dormant volcano having last erupted in 1755.

Easter Saturday the Concours were held at Nobs Line park adjacent to the beach. The members enjoyed a Sausage Sizzle and the ladies took a bus trip which included lunch and shopping. The evening was started by the welcome speech followed by a Banquet dinner. The entertainment for the night was The Emerald Brothers who were fantastic.

Easter Sunday morning all members were allocated a ride in a Studebaker for the Sunday Drive to Tawhiti Museum, lunch and a tour. The drive was very pleasant through the beautiful countryside with magnificent views.

- Vale John Venema

It is with great regret that we report the passing of John Venema on the 26th of September. Everyone with an interest in Studebakers knew of John and his collection of cars and trucks. Both he and Lorna have been long time members of the Studebaker Car Club of Queensland and have regularly attended local, national, and international Studebaker meets. Our club will never be quite the same without him. Our thoughts are with Lorna and her family at this very difficult time.

- Studebaker Concours 2013

The Club Concours for 2013 was held on 14th- 15th September. The location for this year was Suttons Beach at Redcliffe. Our Club was very fortunate to secure an excellent location along the esplanade just south of the main Redcliffe Festival Event.  Many of our club members stayed at nearby accommodation on Anzac Avenue which was in walking distance to the Ambassador Hotel for the Concours Dinner held on the Saturday night.

- Pokolbin 20th National Meet, 2013

Over the Easter weekend of 28th March to 1st April, 32 members of our Queensland Studebaker Car Club attended the 20th National Meet which was held in Pokolbin.
Pokolbin is located in the “Heart of Wine Country” in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.
Many of the club members drove their Studebakers to the meet, some going earlier to enjoy the tourist attractions along the way, others driving the distance in one day. The Meet Headquarters was located at the Mercure Resort, Hunter Valley Gardens.

Mercure – Meet Headquarters

Everyone came together on the Thursday afternoon for Registration followed by dinner in the evening. Always a lot of fun to catch up with other Studebaker Club Members to discuss how their trips went driving to the Meet.
The Swap Meet was held on the Friday which has something that you must have or need! Lots of time to clean our Studebakers, visit wineries and sightsee the Hunter Valley then onto dinner.
On Saturday the Concours were held in the top Car Park of the Hunter Valley Gardens which was the perfect spot to display all the shiny and eyecatching Studebakers.

The Hunter Valley Gardens known as the “Jewel of the Hunter” has many outstanding features including 10 differently themed garden areas with over 8 kilometres of pathways. It is nestled amongst the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges in the heart of the Hunter vineyards.
Saturday evening we all enjoyed dinner and the Auction which always creates a fun night of frantic bidding.
Sunday morning was the Observation run finishing at “Lost in the Fifties” Museum at Newcastle. The museum is an American Classic Car Museum, it is just like being on the set of “Happy Days.” We all had an interesting time looking and walking around for a few hours. www.lostinthe50’s.com.au
Sunday night the Presentation Dinner was held at Lindeman’s Winery. Three of the Queensland Club Members won trophies for their Studebakers, Louise Cosgrove and Lorna & John Venema. The trophy was a bottle of Lindemans red wine with an engraved Studebaker on the front.  Leila Cosgrove & Greg Devantier also won a trophy each for the Observation run. Congratulations to everyone.
Monday morning was farewell to all of our Studebaker friends and to the Hunter Valley. The 20th National Meet was most enjoyable with a huge thankyou to the Newcastle Studebaker Car Club for organizing the Meet at such a relaxing and scenic place called Pokolbin.
